In Times Past: Essays from the Upper Valley Book 2

The Bradford Public Library announces the publication of Larry Coffin’s second book, In Times Past: Essays From the UpperValley. The twenty-two essays, originally published in the Journal Opinion, have been enhanced with additional materials and photographs. The essays deal with local institutions such as town libraries, schools, movie theatres and bands and topics dealing with agriculture, mining, logging as well as population changes and political movements.

The Library will host a reading and book signing open to the public on Wednesday, May 30 at 7 PM. A slide presentation of images from the book will accompany readings from several of the chapters. A book signing will also take place on Saturday, June 9 at Farm Way.

While Coffin is president of the Bradford Historical Society, the material for the essays is selected from the history of towns on both sides of the Connecticut from Thetford and Lyme to Woodsville and Groton. While not every town is mentioned in each essay, the collection covers materials from all the communities of the region. The themes show both common characteristics of area towns and distinct differences.

The proceeds from the sale of the book will be used by the Bradford Public Library to enhance its programs to area residents. Some of the funds from the first book were used to establish a local history research center including the purchase of a new microfilm reader giving access to the Library’s old newspaper microfilm collection.

The book is available for a $20 donation to the Library. Books are available at the Library, Farm Way the Bradford Town Office, the Journal Opinion office, North of the Falls, the Bradford branch of the Merchants Bank, the Piermont branch of the Woodsville Guaranty Savings Bank and the Bradford, Fairlee and Newbury branches of the Wells River Savings Bank. Mail orders may be sent to Larry Coffin, P.O. Box 490, Bradford 05033 along with a check payable to the Bradford Public Library for $24 per copy.
